Survivor One World Episode 10 Recap
The Real Housewives of Orange County Recap: Glamping Trip!
Last week on the RHOC, Tamra had her breast reduction surgery, Gretchen had started auditioning for The Pussycat Dolls and, of course, there was more drama with Vicki.
Just another day in Orange County, right? Is there any other type of day?
Let’s check in with these crazy women once again with THG's +/- recap!
Vicki visits Tamra and asks “Where are your boobs?” Then Vicki tells Tamra that she and Alexis are friends now, except “you can’t fix stupid anywhere in the world.”
This friendship is going to be an awesome one, right? Because friendships motivated by jealousy always are.
Alexis, meanwhile, is planning a Glamour Camping (Glamping) party and she’s making S’more’s goodie bags. She thinks it’ll be great to get the girls together in a place where they can lounge in their sweats and get to know one another.
Except her nose isn’t entirely healed so she can’t carry anything heavy or bend over. I can’t wait to see how Glamping goes. Can’t wait. Plus 10.
Gretchen’s nursing a sore throat and Slade tries to help her rest her voice by telling her to text him if she needs anything from downstairs, to which she replies “I’m writing it!” Minus 5 for missing the point.
Alexis is really concerned with her nose. Vicki says she can’t even tell Alexis had a nose job, but that’s because she doesn’t spend a lot of time staring at Alexis’ nose. It’s totally obvious she’s had a nose job and on top of that she won’t stop talking about it.
Brianna, Heather, and Vicki trash talk Alexis’ decision to bring her hair and make-up girl, Shannon, along as her “medical support” for the trip. And Alexis and Shannon decide to slam dance in their vehicle on the drive to the Glamping facility. That can’t be good for Alexis’ nose, right?
Eddie comes to visit Tamra and brings her flowers. Plus 5.
Tamra’s using her old implants, which she requested to bring home with her post-surgery since they’ve been a part of her life for so long, as ice packs. Plus 5. Somehow, I find this hilarious and it makes her way more down-to-earth.
The girls have arrived at the Glamp site and they learn that while they may have King-sized beds, they’ll be cooking their own food. Heather takes the lead on what they order which seems to annoy Alexis. Minus 5 to Heather.
But really, Heather’s the one who thinks cooking equals opening a take-out container, so letting her order isn’t the smartest move these girls could make.
The girls gather around a picnic table and Alexis goes on a tirade about how there’s nothing glamorous about this at all! They have no wine! There’s no counter space in the bathrooms! They don’t have red and white wine glasses! They have no ice for their noses! Minus 10.
Vicki’s disappeared from the group to go call Brooks to let him know she’s there and she’s safe. Brianna says their relationship (Brooks and Vicki) is weird. That’s the truth. Plus 5.
Alexis and Heather start talking about how Alexis and her husband are renting their house in a market when they could own. This is hard for Heather to understand and really none of Heather’s business. Plus 5 to Alexis for keeping cool.
Alexis brought everyone infinity scarves as gifts for Glamping. In a one-on-one, Vicki says that without Tamra around, she really likes Alexis.
Heather’s determined to salvage this Glamping-turned-camping experience, so she actually pays attention to the guy who tells them how to start the fire so they can cook their food. Plus 5.
Alexis, meanwhile, is ready to just order a pizza.
While cooking, Vicki can be heard saying “Ow! I keep burning my fingers!” To which Brianna replies “Stop sticking your fingers in the fire, Mom!”
How did Brianna get so smart? It can’t be because she sucked wisdom from Vicki’s bosom. Unless she sucked all the intelligence Vicki had.
A skunk crashes their party and Vicki saves the night by shouting at it and chasing it away. If only the skunk had gotten her first.
Vicki uses Brianna’s cancer scare for sympathy. Again. And talking about how it’s caused her to reevaluate life. She says she wants to make amends for her part in any wrongs that have been done. But only her part. Alexis buys it. Seems like Heather does, too.
Heather calls home and her husband says he’s worked his regular life. She got to sleep. She wins.
Vicki asks Brianna if she’s becoming a rebel and then asks about her relationship with her boyfriend and wonders why she had to find out that Brianna was in a relationship from Facebook. (Uh-oh, Brianna.)
In a one-on-one, Brianna says she tries to keep the details of relationship as vague as possible because her mother will have to know ALL THE THINGS about it otherwise. Smart girl, that one. Plus 5.
With Heather’s insistence, Vicki’s decided she’s going to buy herself something “fabulous” to wear on her ring finger since she’s no longer wearing her wedding ring. Alexis says Brooks should buy her a “promise ring.” I can’t tell if Alexis is joking or serious.
After a “swarm” of bees causes the women to relocate inside the market diner, Heather puts on her financial planner hat when they start talking about safe communities and diamonds. Heather says they should all make sure their diamonds are insured in case of theft and Alexis says she wears a fake one most of the time.
Between the renting thing and the fake ring thing, alarm bells are ringing in Heather’s head. Plus 5 for the super sleuth.
Back in the real world, Gretchen and Slade go to a vocal producer’s studio to work on her songs for The Pussycat Dolls show. Gretchen’s really struggling.
The producer tells her she’s going to have to keep working on it. In the car on the ride home, Gretchen blames Slade. If he hadn’t done his improv routine, she wouldn’t have gotten into that screaming match with Vicki. Slade tells her she doesn’t have to fight his battles. Minus 10 all around.

88% Miss Bala
Miss Bala (Mexico's foreign film entry for 2011) is an unwavering, startling, and deeply tense movie about one woman's tragic and unwilling association with a powerful drug cartel. Laura (Stephanie Sigman) wants to be the next Miss Baja California, but she's unwittingly pulled into a life of crime after she witnesses a gang hit. The cartel ensures that Laura wins the beauty pageant and becomes a courier for them. The movie takes a Lars von Trier approach to storytelling, putting its heroine through a torture chamber of anxiety and terror. This woman only wants to escape the hell she has accidentally found herself a part of, but every attempt to escape, be it going to the police or confessing assassination plots to the intended targets, gets her corralled back into the fray. For Laura, there is no escape. The movie packs a near-constant surge of paranoia, as we fear that at any time something awful will happen. In fact it's usually only a matter of time. Laura is more a symbol of the collateral damage of Mexico's billion-dollar drug war than a character, and she kind of becomes a numb zombie by the movie's latter half, perhaps accepting her doomed fate. Director Gerado Naranjo favors long unwinding takes and handheld cameras, which add a gritty realism and sense of compounding dread to the picture. The movie has an unflinching level of realism to it that makes it all the more haunting, stripping the romanticism from a life of crime. Much like Italy's heralded crime film Gomorrah, this bleak but impassioned movie shows the inescapable tentacles of organized crime and gives a face to innocents caught in the middle. Miss Bala is a testament to the hidden toll of a nation at war with itself. Nate's Grade: B+

Ivy Bridge-packing HP EliteBook gets reviewed, scores well in early tests
Hear that? That, friends, is the sound of someone in Intel's PR department banging his head against a desk. Though we've read more than a few rumors about the company's forthcoming Ivy Bridge chips, Intel has yet to fully detail the new platform, and has controlled the flow of information so tightly that laptop makers won't even use the words Ivy Bridge when talking about upcoming systems. (It's always "next-generation Intel Core processors," but we digress.) So it's a pleasant surprise, then, to see a review of an Ivy Bridge system before Intel even makes its official announcement. Laptop Reviews has apparently been testing a yet-to-be-announced HP EliteBook 8470p with an unspecified Core i7 processor, integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics, 8GB of RAM and an Intel 320 solid-state drive.
Though the testing team doesn't have much to say about battery life, the raw performance scores are quite impressive, surpassing those belonging to heavy hitters like the HP Envy 17 and Lenovo ThinkPad W520 workstation. Then again, Laptop Reviews is quick to admit that that SSD may have helped boost scores beyond what you'd see in an Ivy Bridge system with a good old-fashioned hard drive. On the graphics side, too, the spankin' new HD 4000 provides a nice (read: several-thousand-point) boost over systems running HD 3000, though we'll have to wait a little longer for real-world gaming tests, it seems. That's the abridged version, but we encourage you to hit up the source link for some more detailed remarks, along with comparisons to other systems.

BlackBerry flagship store coming to Dubai, hopes you'll buy
While RIM's current fortunes are making plenty of execs nervously tug at their ties, there's still plenty of people cheerfully tapping away on BlackBerry keyboards -- especially in the Middle East. It makes at least some sense, then, to launch a big ole' flagship shop in Dubai. Teaming up with local carrier Axiom Telecom, the handset manufacturer is in the final negotiation stages for a 1,500 square-foot store. According to RIM, it's the first of several planned for the region and should mean plenty of places to snap up one of those (reassuringly?) expensive BlackBerry Porsche models on your next overseas trip. Business class, of course.

SELF IMPROVEMENT AND SUCCESS | Free - Business in Australia ...
Everything that happens to us happens in purpose. And sometimes, one thing leads to another. Instead of locking yourself up in your cage of fears and crying over past heartaches, embarrassment and failures treat them as your teachers and they will become your tools in both self improvement and success.
I remember watching Patch Adams ? it?s my favourite movie, actually. It?s one great film that will help you improves yourself. Hunter ?patch? Adams is a medical student who failed to make it through the board exams. After months of suffering in melancholy, depression and suicidal attempts ? he decided to seek for medical attention and voluntarily admitted himself in a psychiatric ward. His months of stay in the hospital led him to meeting different kinds of people. He met a catatonic, a mentally retarded, a schizophrenic and so on. Patch found ways of treating his own ailment and finally realized he has to get back on track. He woke up one morning realizing that after all the failure and pains he has gone through, he still want to become the doctor. He carries with himself a positive attitude that brought him improvement and success. He didn?t only improved himself, but also the life of the people around him and the quality of life.
So, when does self improvement become synonymous with success? Where do we start? Take these tips, friends?
*Stop thinking and feeling as if you?re a failure, because you?re not. How can others accept you if YOU can?t accept YOU? You have to start believing in yourself
*When you see hunks and models on TV, think more on self improvement, not self pitying. Self acceptance is not just about having nice slender legs, or great abs.
*When people feel so down and low about themselves, help them move up. Don?t go down with them. They?ll pull you down further and both of you will end up feeling inferior.
*The world is a large room for lessons, not mistakes. Don?t feel stupid and doomed forever just because you failed on a science quiz. There?s always a next time. Make rooms for self improvement.
*Take things one at a time. You don?t expect black sheep?s to be goody-two-shoes in just a snap of a finger. Self improvement is a one day at a time process. Take it step by step
*Self improvement results to inner stability, personality development and dig this ?. SUCCESS. It comes from self confidence, self appreciation and self esteem.
* Set meaningful and achievable goals. Self improvement doesn?t turn you to be the exact replica of Cameron Diaz or Ralph Fiennes. It hopes and aims to result to an improved and better YOU.
*Little things mean BIG to other people. Sometimes, we don?t realize that the little things that we do like a pat on the back, saying ?hi? or ?hello?, greeting someone ?good day? or telling Mr. Smith something like ?hey, I love your tie!? are simple things that mean so much to other people. When we?re being appreciative about beautiful things around us and other people, we also become beautiful to them.
*When you?re willing to accept change and go through the process of self improvement, it doesn?t mean that everyone else is. Sometimes, even if you think you and your best friend always like to do the same thing together at the same time, she would most likely decline an invitation for self improvement.
We should always remember that there?s no such thing as ?overnight successes. It?s always a wonderful feeling to hold on to the things that you already have now, realizing that those are just one of the things you once wished for. A very nice quote says that ?When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.? We are all here to learn our lessons. Our parents, school teachers, friends, colleagues, officemates, neighbours? they are our teachers.

Preschoolers' reading skills benefit from one modest change by teachers
ScienceDaily (Apr. 17, 2012) ? A small change in how teachers and parents read aloud to preschoolers may provide a big boost to their reading skills later on, a new study found.
That small change involves making specific references to print in books while reading to children -- such as pointing out letters and words on the pages, showing capital letters, and showing how you read from left to right and top to bottom on the page.
Preschool children whose teachers used print references during storybook reading showed more advanced reading skills one and even two years later when compared to children whose teachers did not use such references. This is the first study to show causal links between referencing print and later literacy achievement.
"Using print references during reading was just a slight tweak to what teachers were already doing in the classroom, but it led to a sizeable improvement in reading for kids," said Shayne Piasta, co-author of the study and assistant professor of teaching and learning at Ohio State University.
"This would be a very manageable change for most preschool teachers, who already are doing storybook reading in class."
Piasta conducted the study with lead investigator Laura Justice, professor of teaching and learning at Ohio State, as well as co-investigators Anita McGinty of the University of Virginia and Joan Kaderavek of the University of Toledo. Their results appear in the April 2012 issue of the journal Child Development.
The study is part of Project STAR (Sit Together And Read), a randomized clinical trial based at Ohio State to test the short- and long-term impacts associated with reading regularly to preschool children in the classroom.
The study involved more than 300 children in 85 classrooms who participated in a 30-week shared reading program. As a group, the children came from low-income homes, started with below-average language skills and were at substantial risk for later reading difficulties.
The children were separated into three groups: high-dose STAR (four reading sessions per week), low-dose STAR (two reading sessions per week) and a third comparison group who also had four reading sessions per week. All teachers in the three groups read the same 30 books to their students.
Teachers in the two STAR groups were trained to make specific print references while reading the books. Teachers in the comparison group were told to read as they normally would, and were not prompted to make print references.
Results showed that both one and even two years later, preschoolers in the high-dose STAR classrooms had higher word reading, spelling and comprehension skills than did children in the comparison group. The benefits were not as clear for those in the low-dose STAR classrooms, although they did seem to have slightly better skills than those children in the comparison classrooms.
Piasta said it was particularly notable that students in the high-dose STAR classrooms scored higher on tests of reading comprehension.
"If you're getting kids to pay attention to letters and words, it makes sense that they will do better at word recognition and spelling," she said.
"But the fact that they also did better at understanding the passages they read is really exciting. That suggests this intervention may help them become better readers."
How do print references help preschoolers become better readers? Piasta said research suggests it helps children learn the code of letters and how they relate to words and to meaning.
"By showing them what a letter is and what a letter means, and what a word is and what a word means, we're helping them to crack the code of language and understand how to read," she said.
While this study shows the value of using print references with preschoolers, research suggests very few teachers and parents do this systematically, according to Piasta.
An earlier study by Justice and her colleagues showed that untrained teachers reference print about 8.5 times per reading session -- compared to up to 36 times for those who were trained.
Parents are even less likely to make print references while reading to their children. One study suggests that parents use such references only about once during a typical 10-minute reading session.
"One of the best things about the power of print referencing is how easy it would be to implement during shared reading in the classroom," Piasta said.
"Compared to a lot of interventions, this only requires a small adjustment to teachers' typical reading style. But it pays large dividends in reading skills."
This research was supported by a grant from the Institute of Education Sciences, part of the U.S. Department of Education.

MP3 song-searching can increase risk for drivers

Consumers are increasingly using MP3 players in their vehicles, and auto makers have responded: Data show that 90% of new vehicles sold in the United States have MP3 connectivity. Makers of aftermarket MP3 controllers are also responding with devices that have claimed to decrease driver distraction. But according to human factors/ergonomics researcher John D. Lee and colleagues, MP3 players might increase distraction risk, depending on which devices drivers use and how long they look away from the road while searching for their favorite song. Aftermarket devices designed to reduce distraction can actually increase it.
In Lee et al.'s article, "Scrolling and Driving: How an MP3 Player and Its Aftermarket Controller Affect Driving Performance and Visual Behavior," published in Human Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, 50 drivers age 18 to 25 searched for specific songs in playlists of varying lengths using either an MP3 player or an aftermarket controller. They performed this task in a driving simulator while negotiating varying road segments with frequent changes in traffic patterns and construction activity. In comparison trials they were asked to tune the radio to a particular frequency while driving.
Lee and colleagues found that drivers who searched through long playlists (580 songs) glanced away from the road more frequently and for longer durations than did those scrolling through shorter playlists, resulting in degraded driving performance. The aftermarket controller was found to lengthen, not shorten, glances away from the road. "As seen in this study, these aftermarket devices do not always have the expected effect," Lee noted.
These results are significant because they bring yet another dimension to the driver distraction challenge. The most recent figures from the U.S. Department of Transportation indicate that, despite the numerous education campaigns and laws aimed at mitigating driver distraction, the problem may actually be getting worse.
"New technology in the car often seems like familiar old technology, such as a radio, but is often much more likely to distract," said Lee. "A simple task of selecting a song from a list can seduce you into looking away from the road longer than you might have intended, and long looks away from the road can kill."

Business Sales Start to Resume ? Maricopa SBDC
Another good sign for the economy. ?This post taken from the Business Journal?.
Here?s another sign that an economic upswing is taking hold: Business owners are finding it easier to sell their companies.
The number of U.S. businesses sold in 2012?s first quarter was 3.9 percent higher than during the same period a year ago, according to BizBuySell.com, which collects data from business brokers across the country.
BizBuySell reported the sales of 1,729 businesses in January, February and March 2012.
The number of transactions was the?largest in any quarter since the final three months?of 2008. The recession officially began in December 2007 and reached its worst levels in 2008 and 2009.
But this increased activity came with a price ? more specifically, a slight decrease in price.
The median sales price for business transactions actually dropped during the past year ? from $155,000 in the first quarter of 2011 to $150,000 in the same quarter this year.
And the same trend is evident when prices are compared to revenues and cash flow. Buyers typically paid 2.48 times cash flow for businesses a year ago, a multiple that dropped to 2.36 times cash flow during the most recent quarter.
So which trend will prove to be more significant ? higher sales or declining prices?
BizBuySell opts for the former. Its quarterly analysis suggests that business owners are gaining confidence that their companies are healthy enough to sell, even if the yield may a bit lower than they might have hoped.
?There are certainly small business owners who have been biding their time since the recession hit in 2008,? said BizBuySell?s group general manager,?Mike Handelsman, in a prepared statement. ?With better financing available for buyers and a larger supply of businesses ready to hit the market, we may finally have the right conditions for a more significant bump in the number of closed transactions.?

Android Central international round-up - April 14, 2012
With the HTC One series launch buzz beginning to settle down, the past seven days have been a little quieter than usual. Nevertheless, the steady stream of device updates and announcements has continued, even if the pace has been a little slower.
Sony Mobile is kicking off its Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update project, with Scandinavian countries being the first to get a taste of ICS on the Xperia Ray, Xperia Arc S and Xperia Neo V. Meanwhile, long-suffering Galaxy S II owners in Vodafone UK finally got their ICS update, as did Nexus S users on Wind Mobile and Videotron in Canada.
There were also a couple of interesting new device announcements -- Vodafone and Huawei announced the Ascend G 300, a surprisingly high-specced entry-level phone, while Korea got a bright pink Galaxy Note.
And later in the week, HTC addressed reports that some One S phones were experiencing chipped edges on their ceramic coating -- owners of affected phones can return their handset for a refund, or have it replaced under warranty. The manufacturer also says it's making small changes to ensure the problem doesn't crop up again.

During a February visit to "RapFix Live," 2 Chainz broke the news to host Sway Calloway that he had been working with Kanye West for months, but now the cat is surely out of the bag. In addition to appearing on the new G.O.O.D. Music single "Mercy," West popped up at 2 Chainz's SXSW set, and this week he made a silent appearance alongside the Atlanta rapper on BET's "106 and Park."
"That's my dog and he doesn't do press — he didn't wanna do it period — and they kind of forced his hand," 2 Chainz told MTV News of West's "106 and Park" appearance, from the set of MTV's "Hip Hop Squares. "I was like, 'You don't have to say nothing, bro,' because at the end of the day I knew he was up there supporting me, period."
"I do a lot of things behind the scenes that people don't know [about], and they only see [what happens] on '106 and Park,' " 2 Chainz continued. "So that would've been another event where they wouldn't have known Kanye was back there, I wouldn't have name-dropped, that would've been part of my process of just working hard and grinding it out."
Although 'Ye's appearance was clearly not planned, it seems like everything worked out for the best. "When he came out, it spilled the beans out the bag, but it was cool," Chainz says. "It was good for hip-hop that he came out and showed support. He wasn't trying to take the shine, but he's just a megastar, anywhere he goes it's gonna happen."
When he joined Sway on "RapFix Live," 2 Chainz, formerly known as Tity Boi, explained the dynamic of his relationship with 'Ye. "For the most part, when we started building our relationship, we found out we had more things in common than different from a musical standpoint," he said. "It's no secret that I came from the hustle background, from that trap, and it's no secret that he's maybe more of a hipster swag, backpack kinda guy. So I think it'll be interesting when you just drop that in the pot, in the blender, and see the outcome and results of some of that."
2 Chainz's upcoming album Based on a T.R.U. Story is set for an August 14 release, with the first official single slated to drop on May 1.

PSA: Sony SmartWatch now available in the US for $150
After getting hands-on not once but twice, we can say the rubber strap is comfortable and the 1.3-inch OLED display responsive, though the apps are a mixed bag in terms of usefulness. Tap-to-like on Facebook? Genius. A remote for your phone's camera? Unabashed gimmickry, if you ask us. Using the watch to call someone in your contacts list? You'll need a Bluetooth headset for that feature to be truly handy. Other favorites of ours include the ability to find your lost phone (even if it's set to quiet mode), as well as stream photos and other media from your phone. You can even respond to incoming text messages with a preset reply (e.g., "I'm busy. What's up?"), though good luck using that canned response a second time when your friend gets back to you 10 seconds later. In any case, is all that worth the $150? That's a conversation you best have with your wallet -- in read-only format, naturally.
