Background: Verbal autopsy (VA) is the only available approach for determining the cause of many deaths, where routine certification is not in place. Therefore, it is important to use standards and methods for VA that maximise efficiency, consistency and comparability. The World Health Organization (WHO) has led the development of the 2012 WHOVA instrument as a new standard, intended both as a research tool and for routine registration of deaths.Objective: A new public-domain probabilistic model for interpreting VA data, InterVA-4, is described, which builds on previous versions and is aligned with the 2012 WHO VA instrument. Design: The new model has been designed to use the VA input indicators defined in the 2012 WHO VA instrument and to deliver causes of death compatible with the International Classification of Diseases version 10 (ICD-10) categorised into 62 groups as defined in the 2012 WHO VA instrument. In addition, known shortcomings of previous InterVA models have been addressed in this revision, as well as integrating other work on maternal and perinatal deaths.Results: The InterVA-4 model is presented here to facilitate its widespread use and to enable further field evaluation to take place

[NYT Business Day Live] Luxury Real Estate As Art? | Miller Samuel ...

I enjoyed the interview of James B. Stewart and Alexei Barrionuevo by Louise Story (best last name a reporter could ever have), on the topic of luxury real estate in the New York Times Business Day Live video series. Mr. Stewart (author of Den of Thieves ? one of my favorite books of all time) penned ?The Market for Real Estate Masterpieces? exploring the idea of high end real estate as art based on Alexei?s high end housing market coverage of the past year, including the $100M listing (including the upset interior designer), the $88M sale and the >$90M contract among others.

Here was my take on the ?Art as Real Estate? angle in Mr. Stewart?s column:

?When people refer to their real estate as art, they?re really trying to say it?s unique, that it can?t be replicated.?
He said he?s seen the phenomenon not just in New York, but also Miami, London, Los Angeles and other markets where investors ?are looking for safety in a world of turmoil and uncertainty.?
But, he said, ?they?re confusing price with art. You?d think that titans of industry would be very individualistic about their acquisitions, but at the very top, there?s a herd mentality. You get one or two very large transactions that grab headlines and then it?s like a light switch goes off. In New York, this happened in the second half of 2010, and since then it?s been very intense. The size of what?s happening is unprecedented. How long can this go on? You see this kind of behavior and you have to wonder.?

Iran, North Korea sign technology agreement

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran and North Korea have signed a scientific and technological cooperation agreement, bringing the two nations deeply at odds with the U.S. closer together.

Iran's state TV says the agreement was signed Saturday in Tehran in the presence of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and North Korea's No. 2, Kim Yong Nam. State TV did not provide further details on the document.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told Kim that the Islamic Republic and North Korea have common enemies and that both should resist threats and pressures to reach their goals.

Both countries are bitter enemies of the U.S. and the West. Iranian and North Korean officials have said in the past that their nations are in "one trench" in the fight against the Western powers.
