Rare Colorado Tornado Second-Highest in US History

Most of the time, Chris Kirby chases storms, but sometimes they come to him. During a drive through the mountains this Saturday afternoon (July 28) near his home in Aurora, Colo., to photograph mountain goats and test radio equipment, he got quite a surprise: a rare, high-elevation tornado.

Kirby, who's a registered storm-spotter with the National Weather Service (NWS), took a photo of the thin twister as it briefly touched down on the side of Mount Evans, he told OurAmazingPlanet. He sent his picture to weather service staff, who used maps and line-of-sight analysis to determine that the twister touched down at 11,900 feet (3,627 meters), making it the second-highest tornado ever recorded in American history, said David Barjenbruch, a meteorologist with the NWS in Boulder.

"The funnel briefly touched down on a ridge, just enough to be deemed a tornado," Kirby said. "I'm blessed to have seen such an extremely rare phenomenon."

The highest twister ever recorded was photographed by a hiker at 12,000 feet (3,658 m) in California's Sequoia National Park on July 7, 2004, Barjenbruch told OurAmazingPlanet.

Uncommon tornado

Tornadoes aren't commonly recorded high in the mountains in part because fewer people ? and fewer weather-spotters ? live in these regions and they are more difficult to traverse, Barjenbruch said.

More importantly, mountains break up the large-scale weather systems that give rise to most tornadoes. Areas with high elevation have less atmospheric instability, a key ingredient in tornado formation, Barjenbruch said. Instability is marked by a large temperature difference between warm, moist air near the ground and colder air higher up, which gives rise to thunderstorms and tornadoes.? [Infographic: Tornado! This twister was a non-supercell tornado, also known as a "land spout," Barjenbruch said. Supercell tornadoes are common in the Midwest and South in spring and summer and are formed by thunderstorms that result when large masses of warm, moist air encounter colder air higher up. The lack of Gulf of Mexico moisture in the Rocky Mountains for most of the year and mountainous terrain makes these types of tornadoes a rarity, he said.

The tornado was an EF-0 and didn't cause any damage. "It was a small narrow funnel, but a very picturesque funnel," Barjenbruch said.

It was generated by an updraft of air, pushed into the mountains by thunderstorms moving through the area, interacting with wind shear set up by the mountains, resulting in a swirling funnel made visible by water vapor, Barjenbruch said. These types of tornadoes are rare and usually not very powerful, he said.

On July 21, 1987, there was an EF-4 tornado in Wyoming between 8,500 and 10,000 feet in elevation, the highest altitude ever recorded for a violent tornado, according to the NWS.

Where are all the tornadoes?

According to preliminary data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there have only been 24 tornadoes reported throughout the United States in July, which is by far the fewest for the month since recordkeeping began in the early 1950s. If the twisters stay at bay, this month will shatter the old record of 42 tornadoes set in July 1960.

What's causing the dearth of twisters? "The one-word answer is drought," said Bob Henson, a meteorologist and science writer for the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. Fewer rainstorms means fewer chances for tornadoes, which only form in thunderstorms. "If you don't have thunderstorms, you can't get a tornado," Henson told OurAmazingPlanet earlier this month.

Record drought has gripped much of the country, with nearly two-thirds of the lower 48 states in moderate to exceptional drought. Part of the reason for the drought ? and hence the lack of tornado-producing storms ? is the presence of a high-pressure "heat dome" over much of the country.

Members defend church that blocked black couple?s wedding

They had set the date and printed and mailed out all the invitations, but the day before wedding bells were to ring for Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson, they say they got some bad news from the pastor.

Members of the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs in Mississippi want the world to know that it isn?t a racist church.

?We?re not,? Barbara Mack told WLBT-TV on her way into Sunday services. ?We welcome anybody that wants to come through those doors.?

Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson didn?t feel welcome when the church?s pastor told them the day before the wedding that the mostly white congregation had decided no black couple could wed there.

Dr. Stan Weatherford, the pastor, said a small but vocal minority at the church objected, and threatened to vote him out if he went through with the Wilsons? wedding.

The couple was forced to scrap their plans and get married at another church on just one day?s notice.

First Baptist member Ralph Miley told WLBT he hopes the church will eventually address the controversial decision.

?Personally, I would like to apologize to the Wilsons, to their family and friends, and to the entire black community because this has happened," he said.

The First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs, Miss., forbade the wedding of a black couple in their house of worship.

Barbara Mack?s husband, Bob, blamed the members who ?intimidated the pastor and created a situation that had him in a bind,? and said they ?have some misconceptions? about their religion.

"We hope we can straighten them out, you know, get them to understand what Christianity is all about,? he said.

But Charles Wilson told CNN that the time to "step up and be Christ-like" would have been before he and his wife were forced to move their wedding.

"If it was such a minority of people, why didn't the majority stand up and say, 'in God's house we don't do this?'" he asked.

'Selena' star Lupe Ontiveros dies of cancer at 69

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Veteran actress Lupe Ontiveros, who appeared in scores of TV shows and movies including "Desperate Housewives," ''Selena" and "As Good As It Gets," has died. She was 69.

Ontiveros died Thursday at a hospital in Whittier, Calif., a suburb southeast of Los Angeles, after a brief battle with liver cancer, according to longtime friend and family spokesman Jerry Velasco.

She was perhaps best known for her role in "Selena," the 1997 biopic based on the life story of the Tejano pop star. Ontiveros played Yolanda Saldivar, who in real-life was convicted of killing Selena Quintanilla. The film launched the career of Jennifer Lopez, who played the title part.

Lopez said Friday she was "tremendously saddened by the news of Lupe's passing!"

"I've enjoyed her work throughout the years," Lopez said in a statement. "She was a great actress and working with her in 'Selena' was an unforgettable experience. She will truly be missed."

Ontiveros worked steadily in TV and film for more than 35 years.

"I want to go from the set to the grave," she quipped in 2010 while receiving a lifetime achievement award from the National Association of Latino Independent Producers. "From the stage to the grave, that's how I want go."

Her credits include "Real Women Have Curves," TV's "Desperate Housewives" and ? as in "The Goonies" ? many, many turns as a housekeeper. She once estimated she played a maid more than 300 times on the stage and screen.

"I've had a hell of a good time playing those maids," she told LA Weekly in 2002. "Each one to me is very special ... No matter how much I resent the stupidity that is written into them, the audacity that the industry has when they portray us in such a nonsensical, idiotic, such ? oh my God! ? such a degrading manner, still, my humor survives in these maids. I'm very proud of them."

Born Guadalupe Moreno in El Paso, Texas, on Sept. 17, 1942, Ontiveros caught the acting bug in 1972 when she answered a newspaper ad for movie extras. She went on to help establish the Latino Theater Company in Los Angeles and advocated for Latino performers throughout her career.

"She worked tirelessly to perfect her craft and open doors for countless Latinos along the way," said Alex Nogales, president of the National Hispanic Media Coalition. "Hollywood never gave her the lead role, but in our hearts she will be remembered as our leading lady. She will be deeply missed by all of us."

U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis cited the actress as an inspiration.

"Lupe Ontiveros' great talent extended far past television, stage and motion pictures," Solis said in a statement. "Indeed, she was a fine actress, but more than that, she was a woman of great action. And she was my friend for more than 20 years."

Ontiveros is survived by her husband, three sons and two granddaughters.

Iran Is Readying A 'Nightmare Scenario' For The ... - Business Insider

It's getting easy to overlook the tired rhetoric and hollow tension surrounding Iran, the U.S. and Israel.

It's been months, and months since the back-and-forth began. First, Iran's?shutting the Strait of Hormuz, then its?saying it'd never shut the strait. Then?Israel's planning a solo attack. No,?they're not.

It's frustrating, but that doesn't mean the situation couldn't turn ugly at the drop of a hat.

Joby Warick at The Washington Post reports improved Iranian weapons and an enhanced plan of attack could nail the U.S. fleet parked in the Gulf, and there may be little Navy officials can do about it.

From The Post:

[Iran's] emerging strategy relies not only on mobile missile launchers but also on new mini-submarines, helicopters and hundreds of heavily armed small boats known as fast-attack craft.?These highly maneuverable small boats, some barely as long as a subway car, have become a cornerstone of Iran?s strategy for defending the gulf against a much larger adversary. The vessels can rapidly deploy Iran?s estimated 2,000 anti-ship mines or mass in groups to strike large warships from multiple sides at once, like a cloud of wasps attacking much larger prey.

?This is the scenario that is giving people nightmares,? said [an] official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in discussing strategy for defending against a possible Iranian attack.

We recently wrote on one strategy for thwarting a multi-pronged attack against a naval task force, but Raytheon's new system?isn't up for handling the hundreds of heavily armed small boats officials believe Iran would send against the U.S. fleet.

While Iran has called American ships in the region a threat, and Tehran has allowed nuclear discussions to seemingly fizzle, the latest round of sanctions are entering the final phase of Washington approval.

The Iranian sanctions already in place are having quite a bite, with the cost of chicken doubling in the past year.

The lack of enough chicken, a staple in the Iranian diet, has led Tehran's security forces to ban creative agencies from showing poultry in movies or on TV.

The "chicken crisis" as it's being called, has seen many people take to the streets in protest, while others wonder how long it will be before the poor to take up arms against the rich.

Assuming the next round of sanctions make matters worse, it seems reasonable to wonder when Tehran might decide it has little to lose, and accepts the?Pyrrhic victory found in sinking a couple of U.S. Navy ships.

With its flotilla of speedboats, fleet of submarines, and huge inventory of missiles and mines, Iran is in the position to inflict some damage on the U.S. fleet if for no other reason that it has such a wide array of vessels to attack.

In addition to the?more than 20 ships?of the 5th Fleet stationed in Bahrain, there will be another strike group headed to the Gulf led by the carrier USS John C. Stennis. On top of this,?four additional minesweepers?arrived in the region last month to ensure shipping lanes remained open and undisturbed. Those craft joined the refitted USS Ponce which is being used as a forward staging base.

To that end, 19 other countries will descend upon the Gulf September 16, with the U.S., to conduct an immense 11-day mine sweeping operation to practice mine countermeasures.

So while the dialogue about Gulf developments can appear to be the same tired old mantra from yesterday, the situation continues to develop and it may not be Iran that strikes first.

With both the U.S. and Israel blaming Iran for the Bulgarian terrorist bombing, it seems likely the two nations could be keeping score, and reach a point where they jointly launch a strike against the Muslim nation.

If that happens, expect the U.S. to suffer casualties and the price of oil to go through the roof. Just don't expect to see it before the November elections.

? ? During the 2nd Quarter of 2012, the Sarasota real estate market achieved the highest level of home and condominium sales in the past 7 years with 2,604 homes and condos sold in the April - June period.

? ? The 864 closed transactions in June alone represents the second highest number of home and condominium sales since September of 2005. The only higher point, according to one knowledgable Sarasota luxury homes Realtor, was in April of this year when sales were slightly higher at 886. As expected with the migration north of our snowbirders, the number of pending sales (properties under contract but not yet closed) dropped just slightly in June to 860 after four months in a row when pending sales topped 1,000.

? ? The available inventory of homes and condos on the market dropped again to another 10-year low of 3,816. The June inventory of homes for sale was a 4.1 month supply of single family homes and a 5.2 month inventory for condos. Whenever the number of housing units on the Sarasota MLS falls below a 6 month supply, pressure begins to build and prices start to rise. Demonstrating this market dynamic, the median sale price of single family homes in June was $178,500 while the median price on condominiums was $195,000, both numbers well above their 12 month running averages. FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Authorities in northern Arizona are investigating an animal cruelty case in which a kitten was buried up to its neck in concrete inside a metal pipe but didn't survive.

The cat was rescued in late May from a 7-foot-tall metal pipe being used in the construction of a horse shelter in Colorado City, located in a remote area between the Grand Canyon and Utah. It died days later at an animal sanctuary in Kanab, Utah.

Andrew Chatwin, who poured the concrete and discovered the kitten the following day, said Wednesday that he believes the kitten was encased in retaliation for his and another man's criticism of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, to which they used to belong.

An attorney for the church, Rodney Parker, said there is no evidence the church or any of its members were involved. The Colorado City Marshal's Office took pictures and interviewed nearby residents but has tabled the case, citing a lack of leads.

"It's an extremely sad incident, and it's an ongoing investigation," said acting Chief Marshal Helaman Barlow. "If anyone has any leads, please contact the marshal's office."

Chatwin, 44, was pushed out of the church more than a decade ago after a dispute with FLDS leader Warren Jeffs, who is imprisoned in Texas after being found guilty last year of sexually assaulting two of his two dozen underage brides. Chatwin was building a horse shelter for fellow apostate Isaac Wyler about a block from where he lives in Hildale when he found the kitten, meowing inside the pipe on May 31.

Chatwin cut away the pipe and chipped at the concrete with a hammer, documenting the rescue with this video camera. He then took the kitten to Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, where the staff named it Thomas. Society spokeswoman Barbara Williamson said staff members worked to remove the remaining concrete from the kitchen, but it died from injuries on June 4.

Chatwin and Wyler have been working with Salt Lake City accountant Bruce Wisan on his management of the United Effort Plan ? the church's $114 million communal property trust. Chatwin has videotaped Wyler delivering tax and other notices for more than two years to homes of FLDS members in the twin towns of Hildale and Colorado City, which he said has pushed himself and Wyler even further out of favor in the communities.

It's unlikely the kitten climbed the metal pole itself and fell into the concrete, Chatwin said, but he allowed that "I don't know who did it, physically." He said other dead animals have been placed on Wyler's property, and he videotaped those incidents as well.

"I have to take it as a hate message," he said.

Town Marshal Curtis Cook wrote in his report that he interviewed several neighbors who did not witness the incident and didn't know who would have inflicted the abuse. Parker said the location does not indicate the abuse was connected to the church.

The FLDS practices polygamy, a legacy of early Mormon church teachings that held plural marriage brought exaltation in heaven. However, the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints abandoned the practice in 1890 as a condition of Utah's statehood and excommunicates members who engage in the practice.

"It's really inappropriate to try to extend that the FLDS church on the basis of nothing at all, except a dead cat," Parker said. "They don't even have evidence it was a church member, let alone the church."

Mohave County Sheriff Tom Sheahan, whose office recently began patrolling Colorado City under a grant from the state attorney general's office, said his deputies also would pursue the case if they can develop leads.

"We're looking to see if there's anything we can do about it because it's absolutely cruel," he said.
